I've been assigning Top Secret Snow Day Missions for 3 years now. The first year I did, we missed school for ten snow days, last year we missed school for six snow days. This year, we've already missed several days this week to snow. Good thing I sent my snow packets home last Friday!

I use to send home all the copies the students would need to complete each mission, but last year I decided to put them on my classroom website for parents to print themselves. There's always one activity that's mandatory and this year it was completing the Ready Freddy Super Secret Valentine Comprehension Packet.

I purchased this from Stories by Storie. I think she use to be a member of the Second Grade Teachers Club I was apart of years ago. I love her book companions, they're perfect for my 3rd graders. 

I also found the book on Scholastic Reading Club for $1 each. I purchased one for each of my students to include with their packet as well. They get to keep the book for their personal collections.

Top Secret Snow Day Missions

Yup... this teacher here is planning on a BUNCH of snow days this year! Back in January I blogged about the Snow Day Missions I was going to send home with each child. This year I decided to switch it up.

Snow Day Missions

I've decided that I wouldn't copy all those activities from last year and send them home. I uploaded them to my classroom website instead. Parents have the option of printing them out or asking me for a hard copy. I did save all the unfinished snow work from last year so I have quite a few hard copies of several of the activities.

 

Just like last year I'll glue the cover (pictured on the left) on a large manila envelope. I'll also include the menu (pictured on the right) with all the various activities.

I did include the Build a Ski Resort PBL Unit, I copied and stapled it and included it in every packet. That activity is mandatory. I have fallen in love with the Project Based Learning Units from this Digital Divide and Conquer and my students enjoy them as well. I figured this would be a great way for them to complete one at home this winter with their parents. I'll have to blog about those amazing units in another post.

I survived the first day back from Winter Break and was greeted with two new students. I'm up to 25 but I'm still doing better than the 28 students I had last year!

Anyway I'm thinking ahead to all those snow days I'm believing we will have this year and I want my students to be prepared. I know there's all kinds of websites I can assign my students but at the end of the day... I'm old school and I love good ole fashion paper and pencil and face to face instruction. So here's what I came up with...


I decided to create a menu of activities and a log for recording their learning.



Created this snowball web and coordinating stationary for them to write about their snow day.



I created some math grids, word problems and threw in a cute poster they could work on.



Here we have some language arts and science activities.

All the many papers I need to copy for these packets not to mention the Time For Kids Magazine and reproducibles I'm also going to put with it.
